Andyco Aerospace Designs Inexpensive Spacecraft
The first ina series of low-cost satellites, "EconoSAT 2000" is scheduled to reach the testing phase by 2002. Built off the the frame of a 1977 Ford Mustang II, the sporty new satellite will come with many features you'd expect in systems costing millions more. "We feelthe economies of the EconoSAT's Mustang II underpinnings enables us to keep mission costs very low." says project director Dr. Boris Weilspinner. "While your typical unmanned spaceflight is averaging in the tens of millions, we're confident we can get that down below $3500." Thoughthere were initial concerns about the Mustang II's poor reliability and inferior quality, Andyco technicians are unfazed. "In space there's no road salt, so you don't have the corrosion issues," explains Weilspinner. Executivesat Andyco Aerospace are hopeful that the success of the current program will bode well for the ultimate goal of sending a manned motorhome to Mars.
